What is the TMJ

The temporomandibular joint is the hinge joint that connects your lower jaw to your skull — one on each side of your face, just in front of your ears. It's one of the most complex joints in the human body, responsible for every movement your jaw makes — talking, chewing, yawning, and swallowing.

When something disrupts the balance of this joint — whether it's muscle tension, bite misalignment, injury, or structural issues — it can cause a wide range of painful and disruptive symptoms collectively referred to as temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD.

The Connection Between TMJ and Bruxism

Teeth grinding and TMJ disorder are deeply intertwined. Many patients with TMJ pain are unknowingly grinding or clenching their teeth during sleep — placing enormous, repetitive stress on the joint and surrounding muscles night after night. Signs of bruxism include worn, flattened, or chipped teeth, increased tooth sensitivity, and jaw soreness in the morning.

If we suspect bruxism is contributing to your TMJ symptoms, we'll discuss the most effective way to protect both your joint and your teeth — typically starting with a custom nightguard.

The Connection Between TMJ and Bruxism

They protect neighboring teeth

A dental bridge requires grinding down the adjacent teeth to create crowns for support. An implant stands entirely on its own — leaving the neighboring teeth completely untouched and preserving their natural structure.

They look completely natural

The custom crown placed on top of the implant is matched precisely to the shade, shape, and size of your surrounding teeth. Most people — including you — will not be able to tell it apart from your natural tooth.

They preserve your facial structure

By preventing bone loss, dental implants help maintain the natural contours of your face and jaw over time — preventing the sunken, aged appearance that can result from tooth loss and bone resorption.

    TMJ Diagnosis at Evergreen Dental

    CBCT 3D Imaging

Our Cone Beam CT scanner provides detailed three-dimensional images of your jaw joints, bone structure, and surrounding tissues — far beyond what a standard X-ray can show. This allows us to assess the condition of the joint itself, identify structural abnormalities, and rule out other causes of pain with precision.

    Digital X-Rays

High-resolution digital X-rays give us an immediate view of your jaw structure and bite relationship.

    Comprehensive Clinical Evaluation

We’ll assess your jaw movement, listen for joint sounds, evaluate your bite, and discuss your symptoms in detail — including when they occur, what makes them better or worse, and how they’re affecting your daily life.
