Signs You May Need a Root Canal

Root canal infections don't always announce themselves loudly — but when they do, the symptoms can be difficult to ignore. Common signs that root canal therapy may be needed include:

Persistent pain & sensitivity

Ongoing toothache, sharp pain when biting or chewing, and sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers even after the source is removed.

Visible changes

Noticeable darkening of the tooth, deep decay, or cracks that may indicate damage reaching the inner tooth.

Gum symptoms

Swelling, tenderness, or a small pimple-like bump on the gums near the affected tooth, often signaling infection.

Other warning signs

The Root Canal Process at Evergreen Dental

    Diagnosis & Imaging

We begin with a comprehensive evaluation including digital X-rays and, where appropriate, CBCT 3D imaging. Our Cone Beam CT scanner provides a detailed three-dimensional view of the tooth’s root structure, the extent of infection, and the surrounding bone — information that is critical for planning safe, thorough treatment. We’ll explain exactly what we find and walk you through the recommended treatment before we begin.

    Anesthesia

Local anesthesia is administered to ensure the tooth and surrounding area are completely numb. We take the time to ensure you are fully comfortable before proceeding. For patients with significant anxiety, we can discuss additional comfort options.

    Accessing the Pulp

A small opening is made in the top of the tooth to access the inner pulp chamber and root canals.

    Pulp Removal & Canal Cleaning

Using precise endodontic instruments, we carefully remove all infected and damaged pulp tissue from the pulp chamber and root canals. The canals are then thoroughly cleaned, shaped, and disinfected to eliminate all bacteria and debris.

    Canal Sealing

The cleaned canals are filled and sealed with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha, which prevents bacteria from re-entering the tooth. A temporary or permanent filling is placed to close the access opening.

    Crown Placement

In most cases, a tooth that has undergone root canal therapy requires a crown to restore its strength and protect it from fracture. At Evergreen Dental, we offer same-day crown technology — meaning in many cases your crown can be designed, fabricated, and placed in a single visit. We’ll discuss the best approach for your specific tooth at your appointment.
